The Fiddle and the Bow in Scotland

The play The Fiddle and the Bow has been booked for the Coldingham Hall Theatre in Coldingham, Berwickshire on Friday 20th November. The venue has capacity for 100, so a full house is hoped for.

Negotiations are taking place for the play to be performed at the Panopticon in Glasgow at a comedy festival in March 2010.

Bacon Grabbing for twenty years

On Wednesday 21st October we will celebrate 20 years of monthly meetings of Bacon Grabbers. Please try to join us at the Marble Arch in Manchester. Some time around 8.30 we will show the feature film of the evening. We are also currently working through my new collection of Charley Chase silent shorts. Babe featured in one last month. The 21 DVD Universal set helps with requests for particular shorts.

The Bacon Grabbers' first meeting was on Wednesday 18th October 1989 (when we showed on VHS) and the film Bacon Grabbers was released on 19th October 1929.

For the first few years we met in Brannigans Bar and then we moved to the Marble Arch around 1991 or 1992.

Norm and I, together with Roger Robinson and Dave Dearle of the Saps at Sea Tent, will be attending the Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem, Georgia, at the beginning of October, so who knows what we will bring back.

DVD boxed set

A four-disc boxed set of DVDs has March of the Wooden Soldiers, The Flying Deuces, Utopia, Hustling for Health (Stan solo), One Too Many (Ollie solo) and The Lucky Dog.

Peter Andrews bought the set for £10.00, which he says is good value. He found the discs to be wrongly labelled, but otherwise he is very happy with his bargain.

Peter describes the picture quality of Utopia as "The best I have ever seen, though that is not saying much." He adds, The other three discs have very high picture quality and I highly recommend them. One Too Many (1916) has excellent picture quality, considering its age."

Custard pie fight world record

Fred Terris saw on the ITN website (18.09.09.) that a new custard pie fight world record was set as 271 people splattered each other in New York.

Get them back on TV

Paul Meldon has started a petition at http://petition.co. uk/get_laurel_and_hardy_ back_on_uk_tv.

He writes, "The classic and timeless films of Laurel and Hardy used to be shown regularly on UK television during the 60s, 70s and 80s. Generations of fans fell in love with the antics of the cinema legends and love them to this day. Sadly for decades the Boys' films have not had any regular showings on UK TV.

Whole generations of children have missed out on the hilarious comedy of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The aim of this petition is to gather enough interest to encourage modern TV companies to give the films a regular peak time slot and make millions of children laugh (again). Please sign and forward the petition address on to as many people as possible."

  • Ed: There are at least two other petitions on the go with the same objective. The more petitions, the more likely we are to succeed, I would think. Let us hope that we get results.
