Two major events coming in September

17th Annual Laurel and HarDay

Saturday 5th September, Wigan

Yep, it's that time of year again! This year is the first time the Dirty Work Tent has held the HarDay (Chris Coffey the original organiser has kindly allowed us to continue the tradition, thanks Chris). So, what's on? Well, see here for the details:

Then how can you miss it! One thing, if anybody wants to sell any memorabilia, can you let me know then I can allocate tables. Hope to see lots of you again (if even for the first time!).

In the press

Reporter Jim McBeth spoke to Dean McKeown and a two-page spread resulted in the Daily Mail on 15th August. The item is reproduced in its entirety on the Nutty Nut News Network.

The Herald (08.08.09.) had a brief mention of James Finlayson and how the star was to be celebrated in Falkirk on 23rd August with a cinema film show.

On the same day, the Daily Mail also mentioned the tribute.

Also on the same day Showbiz Sam in the Daily Record answered a question about Zenobia, the 1939 film starring Oliver Hardy but without Stan Laurel.

Reversal of fortunes at Fraternally Yours Tent

We had a meeting on 12th June with only me and my helper. No other people attended. It must have been a summer thing.

But come the 6th August my member Ken Harding brought himself and six friends (and I allowed him a free raffle ticket). We had a total of twenty Laurel and Hardy fans turn up. We showed 45 Minutes from Hollywood, Brats, Hog Wild, Busy Bodies and Come Clean. There was a great atmosphere and they howled with laughter all the way through the films.

Back in Paisley

The Bonnie Scotland Tent is about to hold its first meeting of the year, having found a new venue at the Tartan Rose bar in Paisley. The show is scheduled for 26th August, starting at 7.30pm.

Murder, they said

At the 250th meeting of the Brats Tent of Sheffield (why, that's almost a quarter of a millennium!) in August we had a great meeting, with a larger than expected turnout for the time of year. There were plenty of Brats there too, all sat on the front row to get a good view of the screen! As it started to go dark we put on The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case, which most of the young members hadn't seen before. Generally we leave a light on at the back of the room to help people to see their way to the bar for cocktails. However, as the "two slovenly gentlemen" went into the bedroom for the night, the backroom light was switched off to make the scene more atmospheric! With the initial "I'm scared" echoing from the front row, followed by howls of laughter, it worked a treat! I overheard at least two of the children afterwards saying to their parents, "Have we got that one at home? I want to watch it again!"

Les Conscrits

Jean Poulain found the French poster below, for The Flying Deuces, on the Internet.

For the record

The letter concerning the Dance of the Cuckoos 78rpm record that appeared in the August issue of Record Collector magazine was mistakenly reprinted in the September issue, but under the heading of "Fleetwood Mac". Doh!

Bookends

Dave Oyston spotted an advert for subscriptions to Book and Magazine Collector in which a free set of bookends was on offer. Alongside books illustrated with the bookends, with the Oxford Pocket Dictionary etc, was Laurel and Hardy by Randy Skretvedt!

Brats' curry

On Tuesday 22nd Septober, the Brats Tent are hosting their Annual Curry Night, which is being held at a new venue, the Zeenat Restaurant, Sheffield (next to the Don Valley Stadium). There will be a hot buffet with every-thing "home made" on the premises. If anyone wants to come along they will be made most welcome. However, please contact me at ollie_varadi@yahoo. co.uk by 14th Septober to confirm numbers.

Irv and Mary visit

In August I had the pleasure of Irv and Mary Hyatt visiting with me and my wife. Irv is the Grand Sheik of the Blotto Tent of New Jersey. I've known Irv and Mary for years, having met them at many of the International Conventions.

Irv has been doing research for a number of years on the tours of Laurel and Hardy in the USA and is hopeful of publishing a book on this late this year. You may have seen some excerpts of this (they're excellent) in recent Intra-Tent Journals. I think there will be a wealth of important and interesting information in this upcoming book, and all Sons wish him well in this endeavour.

Irv is also a major collector of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia.
