Dennis Moriarty
sent us a programme from the Oliver Hardy
Festival held in Harlem in the fall. The
cartoon above adorned the front page of
the programme. Dennis (Stan) and Dale
Walter (Ollie) were, as usual, Grand
Marshalls at the event.
They were also on
the front page of The Masonic
Bulletin in September
(below).

Babes in
Toyland
Bill Rhodes had a two-page
article on Babes in Toyland in the
Intra-Tent-Journal (Fall 2009). Part
reads:
A number of
health problems interfered with the making of
Babes in Toyland. Hal Roach had an
appendectomy. His wife and child were hurt in an
auto accident, and Stan fell on the set,
injuring his leg. Shooting was delayed a few
weeks. In the meantime Henry Kleinbach
(Brandon), who played Silas Barnaby, was
involved in a brawl. To make matters worse,
Kewpie Morgan, who played Old King Cole,
ruptured his stomach when he laughed too much on
the set. Finally, Babe Hardy had his tonsils
removed late in the shooting. Even with all of
these problems, the film established Laurel and
Hardy not only with adults but with children for
all time.

About an excerpt from
Emmerdale on Harry Hill's TV Burp
(ITV, 14.11.09.), Harry said that the actress shown
looked like Stan Laurel (which she did). He then
voiced over the clip, impersonating Stan's
voice.
The Boys are mentioned
practically every day on some programme. They
were also mentioned in Coronation Street
(ITV1, 13.11.09.).

My 11-year-old, Toby
Wainwright has become addicted to the Sons of the
Desert, having recently acquired the DVD box set,
and visited the County Hospital Tent at Bradford.
He sent me two text messages to advise of Laurel
and Hardy being mentioned on TV, in Coronation
Street, then Stan getting a mention on Harry
Hill's TV Burp.
His brother, Jack, is also
Laurel and Hardy "bonkers"!

Sailors in the
Community
Members of the Sailors
Beware Tent based in Hyde visited the Sycamores
Nursing Home in Newton on Saturday 14th November.
One side of our activities is to raise funds for
charities and good causes. The latest idea is to
take the duo's wonderful comedy into nursing homes
to entertain the residents, bring a smile, have a
laugh and reminisce about the past.
It was a great success
with many residents chuckling away by the end of
the show. As well as viewing films on the big
screen, the tent's own Laurel and Hardy tribute act
"Georgia-Babe and Ulver-Stan" acted out comedy
scenes and Bobby Kemp entertained with songs from
their films.
Judith Craig was visiting
her father James Murray with daughter Madison
(above). Judith said, "It will be a lovely memory
for my dad. He really seemed to enjoy your
performance. To see him laugh and get involved was
a precious memory for me too. You guys made my
heart smile. Many thanks".
