The Fiddle & The Bow

Andrew Shepherd will be performing the World Premiere of his own play The Fiddle & The Bow at the New Crown Inn, Handsworth, Sheffield at 8pm on Monday 15th June.

The play is about the lives of Laurel and Hardy and will involve Andy playing numerous Laurel and Hardy associated characters.

The event is free as part of the Brats Tent's 20th University celebrations. Andrew is asking the audience on the night to complete a questionnaire to help assess whether to pursue his dream of pursuing funding to take the play on tour.

Tom McGrath

Grahame Morris tells us that the obituary of Tom McGrath was published in The Times on 27th May. It included these words: "McGrath's first success as a playwright was Laurel and Hardy (1976), a charming work that is still regularly performed." The accompanying photograph showed McGrath at his typewriter and on the desk was a copy of William Everson's book The Films of Laurel and Hardy.

Saps at Sea Tent

Just a reminder that it is the Second  Sunday (SS) of the month, this weekend which, of course, means it's the Saps At Sea (SS) meeting. As always the Kick Off is prompt at 5.30pm and we will finish at 8.30pm and then can relax and chat in the front bar overlooking the sea. Our theme is Dave Wyatt Fun Night and we will be seeing a few rarities which Dave has previously shared with me and some clips that feature the man himself! Our raffle fund will be donated to the Fire Fund and this has now reached about £1300. We will also have 1 or 2 "visitors" at our meeting, who will be very welcome.

Dave is now out of hospital and doing great. I spoke to him tonight and should be meeting up with him next week and pass over a big cheque to him. I will update everyone at the meting with the news of his progress etc. The GREAT news is that we are likely to see Dave at the Twice TWO event in Septemeber in Southend, which will be wonderful.

So, hope to see most of you for a great evening in Southend on Sunday with news of next year's UK Convention, the Twice Two event and Another Special L & H event in North Essex in October.

Chase sound shorts

Yair Solan, expert on Charley Chase, has alerted us to a petition to get Sony to release a 20-short set of Charley Chase films at Columbia. Unfortunately, Sony has postponed the release of this set. You can check out the online petition at:

A Couple of swells!

Like most Sons, I was disappointed when I heard that the County Hospital Tent of Bradford had pulled out of hosting the 2010 UK Convention. Rec-a-member? But to the rescue came a "couple of swells" in the form of Roger Robinson and Del Kempster.

They are putting together a convention in Witney, near Oxford for next year. Knowing these guys it will be brilliant!

I would buy them both a drink, but they have more money then me. Besides I'm sure they would prefer a "Thank you" instead.
